New Health Literacy Resources from the Agency for
Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)
AHRQ
has developed two new tools to assist pharmacies in
helping individuals with limited health literacy.
The new tools are entitled: Is Our Pharmacy Meeting
Patients’ Needs? A Pharmacy Health Literacy
Assessment Tool User’s Guide (http://www.ahrq.gov/qual/pharmlit/)Strategies
to Improve Communication between Pharmacy Staff and
Patients: A Training Program for Pharmacy Staff (http://www.ahrq.gov/qual/pharmlit/pharmtrain.htm).
The initiative is the end result a study co-funded
by AHRQ and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It
was developed by Emory University. Current studies
indicate that those individuals who have limited
health literacy are much more likely to not be able
to tell the difference between their medications.
This population also finds it difficult to
comprehend basic medication instructions and tend to
misconstrue warning labels. In addition, according
to the AHRQ’s 2006 National Healthcare Disparities
Report (http://www.ahrq.gov/qual/nhdr06/nhdr06.htm),
this issue is more acute in the elderly, minorities,
immigrants, and the poor.

Patient Assistance Program (PAP) Resource Center

programs and the use of these programs to increase
medication access. Created by the American Society
of Health-System Pharmacists (www.ashp.org)
with the support and collaboration of the PSSC, the

resource sites, and other useful information to assist
pharmacists in providing comprehensive pharmacy services
to their patients.

The
Bridge to 340B Comprehensive Pharmacy Services Solutions
in Underserved Populations
This is a training manual for pharmacists, medical directors,
and managers at safety net clinics across the country
who are seeking to better understand their options
for improving the value of their pharmacy-related
services. Written in cooperation with Medicine
for People in Need (www.medpin.org)
and supported by PSSC, the manual focuses on 340B-eligible
health care providers; however, other safety net clinics
can benefit from the information, needs assessment
tools, and financial model spreadsheets as well.
These
interactive spreadsheets
have been developed for health center administrators
to use in implementing a new pharmacy
program or revising an existing one. Medpin
and PSSC encourage administrators to work with an
experienced pharmacy consultant when using these
spreadsheets part of their organization's financial
analysis. The financial modeling tools have
been developed to account for a variety of factors
and can predict a program's financial performance
to the degree that accurate data is entered to reflect a
particular health center and its pharmacy program.
